GLOSSARY OF
TERMS
ADF (Automatic
Document Feeder)
- An optional feature which takes several pages and feeds them
automatically, one at a time, to the glass platen for copying.
AMS
(Automatic Magnification Selection)
- Zoom feature that reduces or enlarges the copy based on the given
paper size and the original size.
APS
(Automatic Paper Select)
- The copier automatically selects the most appropriate tray for a
copy by matching it to the length of the original.
Auto
Duplexing
-
A feature that automatically copies
both sides of an original
Auto
Magnification
- A feature that automatically selects the best
reduction/enlargement ratio for the paper size by matching it to the
size of the original.
Auto
Tray Switching
- Paper supply automatically switches from the empty paper tray to
another one without job interruption
Bypass
Feeding
- A device which allows manual feeding of different paper sizes
without changing paper trays. Typically bypass allows copying of
different sizes and materials such as labels, index cards and
transparencies.
Clamshell
Access
- In case of paper jams, the whole upper part of the copier opens
like a clamshell.
Copier
Segments
- Classification of copiers into different industry sectors by
speed, monthly volume and retail price.
Copy
Speed (CPM-Copies per minute)
- The rate at which a copier generates copies measured by the number
of copies produced per minute. Most copiers are priced according to
their speed and volume.
Developer
- A chemical used to transfer toner from the developing unit to the
latent image of the drum surface.
Development
System
- The part of the copier that carries the toner to the latent image
of the drum.
Digital
Duplicator
- A high speed, high volume, multi-copy document production machine
that with volume copying reduces cost per copy to less than a penny.
Drum
(Photoconductor)
- The medium that holds toners to be transferred to the copy paper.
Dual
Component
- An imaging process wherein magnetic developer powders transfer
toners to the drum.
Duplex
- The process of double-sided copying onto a single sheet of paper.
Electronic
Sorting
- Rotate sorts each set of documents or stack sorts documents larger
than 8 1/2 x 11.
First
Copy Speed
- The time measured in seconds to produce the first copy once the
print button has been pressed.
Fuser
Rollers
- The part that melts the toner onto
the paper. After the toner is transferred onto the paper, the fuser
applies heat and pressure to ensure that the toner stays on the
paper permanently.
Human
Sensor
- An energy saving feature that is triggered by sensing human
presence.
Interrupt
Key -
A feature that allows a long job to be stopped (or interrupted) to
permit another job to be run without the user having to reprogram
and restart the original job.
LCT
(Large Capacity Tray)
- A paper tray that holds 1,000 sheets of paper or more.
Magnification
- A feature that allows you to reduce or enlarge and image when
making copies.
Master
- It is an alternative to a drum for duplicators only.
Mono
Component
- An imaging process wherein toners are not transferred by the
developing powders.
Monthly
Volume
- Maximum volume a copier can conduct during a one month period of
time.
Multi
Copy Speed
- The maximum copy speed using the standard 8.5"x11" paper size.
Multifunctional
-
Multifunctional digital copiers can also serve as computer printers
and, in some cases, fax machines or scanners.
OEM
(Original Equipment Manufacturing)
- Manufacturing equipment to be sold under another vendor's name.
Paper
(basis) Weight
- The weight in pounds, of 500 sheets of a specific grade of
standard sized paper.
Platen
- The glass surface that the originals are placed on for copying.
PPM
(Pages per Minute)
- A measure of machine engine speed when making copies. Same
concept as copies per minute.
Pre-owned
- previously owned or used. A pre-owned copier may have been a demo
on the sales floor, was on lease with another company, or was a
trade-in from another company.
Preset
Magnification
- A factory setting for reduction or enlargement modes that are
accessed through the control panel.
RADF
(Reversing Automatic Document Feeder)
- A type of feeder that automatically handles double as well as
single sided originals.
Reconditioned/Refurbished/Remanufactured
- A pre-owned copier that has had the following parts replaced:
drum, cleaning blade, developer, and all wearable belts, clutches
and rollers.
Reduction/Enlargement
- A feature that allows you to either reduce or enlarge an image for
copying.
Resolution
- A
measure of how a digital copier scans and prints copies which is
generally either 400 dpi (dots per inch) or 600 dpi. When referring
to a copier that has a resolution of 600 dpi it means that the
scanned image consists of 600 x 600, or 36,000 dots per square inch.
SADF
(Semi Automatic Feeder)
- A feeder in which the user must feed each original individually,
and the copier will position each original on the platen.
Scan
Once/Print Many (SOPM)
